Beside of carrying out many kinds of avtivities, we implement the project for conserving NR. Currently, we are looking funds to implement 2 projects for NR.

1. Implemented project

Project Name: DEVELOPING NATURE CONSERVATION AND COMMUNITY-BASED TOURISM IN GUN-GALUUT NATURE RESERVE
Duration: 12 months
Supporter: GEF /Global Environment Facility/
Organization: Gun-Galuut Community Association

Project Description: Goal of the project is taking Gun-Galuut as a locally protected area for its unique biodiversity, delicate ecosystem of Kherlen river and globally threatened wildlife habitat, improving locals' participation in the nature conservation activities, developing community-based tourism basing on the Gun-Galuut NR and supporting the locals' life standards by their involvement of the nature conservation and tourism activities. In the frame of the project activities, we have marked the protected area borders and made researches on the population of Argali herds etc., Therefore, we also have blocked some unnecessary roads in the area, placed road signs and made information blocks at necessary spots. Moreover, to keep the area clean, we made protection fences at the core areas such as Ayaga Oasis, Mt Baits etc. Also several serial lessons on nature conservation, tourist services etc have been taken place among the locals.

2. Projects seeking funds

Project Name: COMMUNITY-BASED CONSERVATION INITIATIVE IN GUN-GALUUT NATURE RESERVE, MONGOLIA
Objectives:
  •  Increasing grassroots’ participation in conservation activities and establish a “protection circle chain” around the core areas of Gun-Galuut nature reserve by local community.
  • Improve current situation of locals’ settlement and pasture usages in Nature Reserve and make necessary amendment to the particular regulations.
  • Inform and explain the difficulties in Gun-Galuut Nature Reserve to the public, locals, and Local Administrative Authorities and tourism organizations and develop close cooperation between them to solve the difficulties.
Threats:
  • Home land of Argali sheep is overgrazed and depressed by too much livestock.
  • Nesting area of rare birds Tsengiin Burd wetland overgrazed and depressed by livestock too.
  • Illegal hunting and fishing
Requested Budget: US$ 9740
Duration: 12 months

Project Name: TO PROTECT THE NESTING AREA OF ENDANGERED BIRDS IN GUN-GALUUT NATURE RESERVE
Objectives:
  • Decrease direct and indirect negative impact of the tourism on the endangered birds’ habitat in Tsengiin Burd Wetland.
  • Educate and raise awareness among tourists and community on conservation and protection of the endangered birds’ habitat and provide access to information.
  • Raise awareness among the community about sustainable tourism, increase their income from tourism, and create jobs.
Threats:
  • Tourist who are interested in bird watching affect rare bird's habitat like approaching bird nests and photographing them from very close distance.
  • As ecotourism develops in Gun-Galuut, local people move into the region in large numbers. Sadly, this might result in over-population of the reserve and overgrazing and transformation of Tsengiin Burd Wetland into a grassland with associated changes in its micro-ecosystem. Local herders move their livestock there and their dogs frighten birds and even sometimes destroy eggs and chicks.
  • Herding livestock in and around Tsengiin Burd die in the marshes in spring when they are thin and weak.Although the herders do not actively move their livestock into the area, the animals move there on their own leading, where they often get trapped and die.
Requested Budget: US$ 9945
Duration: 6 months
