In Mongolia 426 different species of birds, out of which 108 species are transitory birtds, 74 species are non-migrant and 231 species are migratory birds, which are come from countries with hot climate, 13 species are birds which come from southward from Siberia in winter. Gun-Galuut is rich in its numerous number of threatened biodiversity which allows tourists to see them closest. For instance: 9 of 28 (30%) Mongolian rare birds registered in IUCN “Red List” are observed here. The birds accounted just as 3000-5000 respectively over the world named Siberian White Crane and White-Naped Crane are said the rarest, also estimated as to become extinct completely maybe after 20-30 years can be observed here only. White-Naped Crane lay eggs at wetland Tsengiin Burd every year. Besides, also the species of rare birds named Hooded Crane and Japanese or Red Crowned Crane are observed here occasionally. In addition to, the birds, also registered in the “Red list”, named Swan Goose and White-tailed Eagle occur here more often.

The largest prey bird of Mongolia, Black Vulture /Aegypius monachus/ nests in Gun-Galuut Nature Reserve. It is so large and its size reaches up to 3 m when the wings are fast. Black Vulture lives in Mt Baits and Berkh for all 4 seasons, lays 1 egg in April and the chick flies in late August.

There are 4 species of Eagle observed in Mongolia, 2 of which inhabit in the Nature Reserve, Steppe Eagle /Aguile nipalensis/ and Golden Eagle /Aguila chrysaetos/. The eagles live in Mt Baits and Berkh. Golden Eagle nests at rock not accessible by anything, however, Steppe Eagle nests on rocks sometimes even on ground.

Also many species of falcons such as Saker falcon (Falco cherrug), Kestrel (falco tinnunculus) and Lesser Kestrel or the Falco naumanni, as well as Upland Buzzard /Buteo hemilasius/ and Long legged buzzard /Buteo lagopus/. Mongolian lark, Calandra lark, Crested lark, Horned lark, Thrushes, Pipits, Magpies and Hoopoes, Owls and Tawny-Owls are seen here. Not only these, but also many endangered and rare waterbirds also occur in Gun Galuut Nature Reserve, namely.

6 species of Crane are recorded in Mongolia, 3 of them: White Naped Crane /Grus Vipio/, Siberian Crane /Gurs leucogeranus/, Demoiselle Crane /Anthropoides virgo/ and Hooded Crane /Grus Monacha/ inhabit in the Gun-Galuut Nature Reserve.

White Naped Crane /Grus Vipio/ inhabits in the Ayaga Wetland in the NR, they spend summers in here. About only 4000 of them have left worldwide, and 800 of them come to Mongolia, and the rest occur in 5 different countries. Distribution of White-Naped Cranes in Mongolia is quite well spread, though the number is not so high. Every year 4 couples of White-Naped Crane come to Gun Galuut and hatch 1-2 eggs at Ayaga Oasis and basin of the River Kherlen in April.

Hooded Crane /Grus Monacha/ is also seen in the Nature Reserve, however, further researches on this species haven't been made so far.

Siberian Crane /Grus Leucogeranus/ 4-6 pairs of Siberian Cranes come to the Nature Reserve every summer.

Black Stork /Ciconia nigra/ is facing problems of extinction worldwide. It spends summers at Ayaga oasis of the Nature Reserve peacefully.

Whooper Swan /Cygnus Cygnus/ So called the Beauty of lakes, Whooper swan spend summers at Ayaga oasis and Lake Ikh-Gun. In late September you can see Session of Swans at Lake Ikh-Gun, which is a fantastic thing to see.
